Can dog daycare and boarding cover the complete paid care roster?
The authored 30-day national scenario earns $59,240 from 35 completed daycare admissions on each of 22 days at $52 and eight average overnight dogs at $80 over 30 nights, including their daytime care. It produces about $849 EBIT and $2,382 cash after maintenance. The $52 day rate is a premium assumption above six named local group drop-ins of $27–$45. A $42 realized day rate makes mature cash about negative $4,394 at the same overnight earning and costs.
What you will produce: One two-service earned-care calculation, actual peak and paid-workload checks, explicit activity and rate boundaries, and opening funding with a coherent 60-month cash schedule.

What to have ready
Bring the accepted adult-dog care scope, actual simultaneous dog calendar, usable groups and overnight places, non-sale isolation/quiet holding, included day/night terms, realized rates, paid individual shifts and wages, actual employer costs, complete premises/installed quotes, deposits, collections and customer liabilities.
Work through the calculation and decision

Define two earned services before adding revenue
A completed daycare dog-day covers an accepted dog within the stated daytime care period. An earned boarding dog-night covers the stated overnight period plus its included daytime care. Boarding dogs are not also charged or counted as another daycare admission in this reference. A booking, assessment, package sale or customer deposit is a separate record.
The planning month contains 30 calendar-day equivalents: 22 daycare days and eight boarding-only daytime days. The default completes 35 × 22 = 770 daycare dog-days and earns 8 × 30 = 240 boarding dog-nights. These are authored activity assumptions. Actual calendar dates, closures, holidays, accepted dogs and demand must replace the normalized period before committing.

Use realized yield and matched care scope
The $52 realized daycare rate produces $40,040; $80 per earned night produces $19,200. Total earned care is $59,240. Realized rates are after concessions and expected collection losses. The $52 teaching day rate is above the six local group-day drop-ins observed in the named examples ($27–$45), and is not a supported typical or national price.
Keep a provider offer attached to its exact location, included hours, group or private care, membership or package condition, dog acceptance, cancellation terms and overnight personnel arrangement. Grateful Dog advertises a $42 full day lasting more than five hours; its overnight offering has different terms. Dogtown advertises an on-site night manager; All Paws states that it has no personnel on-site overnight. Those care promises cannot price the same paid coverage automatically. A listing price is neither achieved yield nor completed demand.

Pay for supervision, relief and the entire care clock
The care roster supplies 48 person-hours on each daycare day, 24 on each boarding-only daytime day and 13 per night, totaling 1,638 monthly person-hours. Supervisor and customer-service coverage each supplies 20 weekly hours × 52/12 = 86.6667 monthly hours. Neither is counted as simultaneous handler coverage. National hourly medians of $17, $23.36 and $21.53 produce $31,736.4667 base wages and $37,449.0307 with the assumed 18% employer addition.
The pools must become lawful individual shifts with competent supervision, handovers, breaks, relief and emergency response. For required duty shorter than 24 hours, 29 CFR 785.21 treats the duty as worktime even when sleep is permitted. Section 785.19 requires complete relief from duties for a bona fide unpaid meal. Do not subtract sleeping or duty meal hours from paid coverage. Actual federal/state applicability, overtime and employer costs require a matched check.

Name each operating and price boundary
At the assumed 12% variable cost share, contribution is $52,131.20. Subtract $48,949.0307 paid payroll and standing costs to obtain $3,182.1693 EBITDA. Deduct $140,000/60 = $2,333.3333 depreciation to obtain $848.836 EBIT; deduct $800 capital maintenance from EBITDA to obtain $2,382.1693 mature cash. Financing, income taxes and additional owner distributions are outside these results.
Holding eight earned overnight dogs and all paid costs fixed, daycare EBIT break-even is approximately 34.1568 average completed admissions per daycare day; cash after maintenance requires approximately 32.6337. At 0.1-average-admission resolution, 34.2 is sufficient for EBIT and 34.1 is not. Holding both activities fixed and boarding at $80, the exact daycare rate needed for EBIT is approximately $50.7473. A $50.75 realized rate clears EBIT at cent resolution; $50.74 does not. These conditions need paid-yield evidence and a feasible whole-dog calendar.

Test actual peaks and activity-growing recovery
The layout assumes three compatible 15-dog groups, or 45 weekday places, and 12 individual overnight places. Quiet holding and isolation are excluded from sale capacity. The default assumes 35 peak daycare dogs and eight peak boarders, giving 43 simultaneous dogs. Its identical eight average and peak boarders is an even-occupancy condition; actual arrivals/departures can create a higher peak.
With eight peak boarders held fixed, the full conditional daycare ceiling is 37 whole dogs. At that ceiling, weekday care uses 47.705 of 48 person-hours and customer service uses 85.31 of 86.6667 monthly hours. The next dog needs 46 shared places. The work model includes fixed supervision and ancillary duties, routine care and a 2% exception allowance whose recovery rises with proposed activity. It checks weekend groups, overnight places/care/relief and management separately. The assumptions do not establish legal or animal-safety capacity.

Separate opening payments from the operating reserve
Opening allowances total $180,000. A refundable two-month premises deposit uses $14,000 cash without becoming a monthly expense. Paid training uses about $2,481, yielding approximately $196,481 total opening payments. The ramp scales both earned services to 40/55/70/82/90/96/100% of mature activity while the full standing paid costs and entered peak reservations remain.
The deepest cumulative operating deficit is about $73,063 in planning month 5. A two-month standing-cost buffer adds about $97,898. Opening payments plus that deficit and buffer total about $367,442 modeled funding. The first twelve planning months use about $58,473 operating cash; the mature positive month does not sustainably recover opening payments within 60 planning months. Replace allowances and dated commitments with actual quotes.

Stress yield, attendance and obligations separately
A $42 realized daycare rate, with the same 35 day admissions, eight overnight dogs, $80 boarding rate and paid costs, produces $51,540 earned monthly revenue and about negative $4,394 cash after maintenance. This is a conditional sensitivity, not Grateful Dog’s operating result. A 10% fall in both realized care rates changes cash from about positive $2,382 to negative $2,831.
A wider peak boarding promise can also reverse feasibility before rooms are full. Twelve peak boarders leave 33 physical daycare places, but the unchanged weekday care clock permits only 25 whole daycare dogs after boarding routine and recovery work. Raising weekday care hours from 48 to 49 can accommodate that 33-dog space boundary in the stated assumptions; it raises payroll and the cash reserve. Recalculate earning and costs from the same inputs.

Read the earning and cash ledger before expanding
Recognize completed days and earned nights under the actual customer terms and accounting policy. Unredeemed packages, future stays, security deposits, refunds, credits and taxes collected for an authority remain separate obligations. The reference assumes same-period collection and no advance-funded launch. A customer advance can improve a current bank balance while creating future care and refund exposure.

One premium-yield day/night scenario and a lower-rate condition
Wage medians are observations. Every commercial price, activity, care workload, capacity, opening amount and ramp is an authored assumption; the premium day rate needs its own realized-yield evidence.
| Input or result | Reference | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Completed care | 770 daycare dog-days; 240 boarding dog-nights | 35 × 22 days; 8 average × 30 nights; no daytime double charge |
| Realized rates | $52 / dog-day; $80 / dog-night | Premium teaching assumptions; not achieved operator prices |
| Earned revenue / loaded paid roster | $59,240 / $37,449 | Same 30-day planning snapshot |
| EBITDA / EBIT / cash after maintenance | $3,182 / $849 / $2,382 | Distinct boundaries; before financing, tax and distributions |
| Sufficient average daycare for EBIT | 34.2 / daycare day; 34.1 fails | Overnight earning and all costs held fixed; 0.1-average resolution |
| Sufficient daycare rate for EBIT | $50.75; $50.74 fails | Both earned activities and $80 boarding rate held fixed |
| Conditional peak ceiling | 37 daycare dogs with 8 peak boarders | Room and complete paid-work clocks; isolation excluded |
| Opening / deficit / retained buffer | $196,481 / $73,063 / $97,898 | Separate cash components; approximately $367,442 funding |
| First twelve months cash / opening recovery | Negative $58,473 / none within 60 months | Launch cash is different from the mature month |
| $42 day-rate condition | Negative $4,394 mature cash | Same overnight earning, activity and paid costs; no claimed operator margin |
What this changes: Obtain supported realized yield and completed compatible demand before accepting the fitted-site and continuous paid-care commitment. A premium positive reference is narrow and a lower day yield reverses it.

The daycare thresholds hold earned overnight activity and all paid costs fixed. Boarding includes daytime care and is not counted again as daycare. The entered average and peak plan fits the disclosed assumed resource clocks. The 40/55/70/82/90/96/100% ramp scales both earned daycare visits and overnight stays; peak places remain reserved as entered. Actual arriving/departing boarders, incompatible groups, sick dogs and isolation can reduce admissions. The group size, staffing, care durations, exception rate and response durations are assumptions, not a legal or animal-safety certification. Paid hours are coverage pools to schedule across employees, with lawful breaks, relief and overtime checked separately. Recognize only completed daycare and earned overnight care at realized net rates; customer deposits, package prepayments, unearned future stays and taxes collected for an authority remain separate obligations. The schedule excludes financing, income taxes, distributions and customer-advance funding. Month-end cash does not replace a dated daily cash forecast.

Choose your next action
| If your finding is… | Your next action |
|---|---|
| The required realized rate exceeds supported paid yield | Change accepted care scope, premises or paid cost structure; do not call the premium assumption a market average. |
| A threshold exceeds actual space or care clocks | Reduce admissions or fund/reprice an applicable care plan before taking another booking. |
| Mature cash is positive while opening cash falls | Fund the dated deepest cash need and retained buffer separately from opening payments. |
| A package sale improves bank cash but care remains owed | Retain a liability/redemption/refund record and test unrestricted funds before spending. |
Errors that can change the result
- Adding daycare revenue again for boarding dogs.
- Using average overnight occupancy as the simultaneous peak.
- Pricing paid overnight care from a remote-only competitor offer.
- Treating the $52 premium assumption as typical supported yield.
- Leaving sleeping, relief, cleaning or incident work unpaid.
- Treating a deposit, prepaid package, booking or physical place as earned demand.
- Using mature cash as launch payback or owner take-home.
